Well… for a while I have been wanting a new trigger for my fullbore rifle.
Not that there was anything particularly wrong with my old one… except that it is 33 years old, has about a 3kg pull on it (maybe a slight exaggeration but not much!) and is getting to the age where it is starting to wear out and play up a little. I do not believe it is a Barnard trigger as Barnard do not think they started making triggers until much later than 1981.
As well as this, I had a couple of dry fires on a well adjusted, modern two-stage trigger and the difference is like night and day. At that moment, I decided my life would not be complete until I owned a nice new trigger to go with my prehistoric action.
A few problems arose when I started shopping for triggers. The main problem being that Barnard changed the design of their action in 1990 and the new Barnard triggers will not fit my 1981 action. Other triggers designed for a Barnard action also will not fit mine.
Here are a few pictures showing the difference between the modern Barnard trigger and the existing trigger on my rifle. The main differences seem to be that the modern trigger is longer at the back (which makes sense as the modern action is longer) and the sear protrusion is much shorter on the modern trigger. The length of the trigger means that it does not fit into the slot on my action.
After asking around a bit, I was put onto Davies Triggers in Australia.

From the very first email, Adam was super helpful and worked with me to manufacture a trigger to fit my action. I was (and still am) a bit concerned having done the measurements myself but Adam knew exactly what he needed from me.
A couple of weeks later, Adam sends me an invoice to pay via Paypal. Paypal makes everything super easy!
And the next week, my new trigger arrived! Yippee! I think it looks super sexy! Davies Triggers were amazing to deal with every step of the way. I can’t believe how easy it was to get this trigger manufactured, paid for and sent. I did giggle a little at the description on the customs tag… “release mechanism for sporting rifle”.
My action is still in the South Island having a stock fitted to it so I can’t even play with my new toy! Never mind, I will send the trigger down South so the stock can be made to accommodate the slightly larger trigger. I can not wait to try it out!!!

So, this 30 odd year old rifle, with a new barrel, new stock, new trigger, its second paint job about to happen, the average age must be down to about 2 now! I realise I know nothing about guns, but just how much of the original is left?
Only the important bit – the action! The action (and bolt) is the actual “gun” bit… pretty much everything else is just an accessory (well not quite but near enough!)
Barrels are consumables… They usually need replacing every two or three seasons on a well used target rifle…
